Romans 9:1-3

To love people is extremely difficult
•heart grieves for them balanced by joy
•but what about those we get no joy from?

Christ calls us to love our enemies
•almost unbearable
•possible through the gospel

Cant look at world as good and bad
•because of sin we all share

By grace we can love
•we were enemies to God

The Christian life is one of joy AND sorrow
•love involves anguish
•CS Lewis "the four loves" pg 169
•we mourn over petty things
•heart should increase in anguish for others

Spurgeon
•worry about mens souls and petty concerns wash away

Nothing can separate us from Christ's love
Chapter 9 is transition from celebration to laminations
Paul is anguishing over Jews salvation

HAHA, I WANT TO GET INTO ROMANS 9 AND THEOLOGY!!!!! BUT I APPRECIATE THIS INTRO.

Why grief?
•they trusted in their own righteousness
-cant be sinless in obeying law
-law is to point to righteousness
-rom 10:3
-became our own savior
-whats wrong with a crutch? WHEN WE LIMP
•they rejected the only thing that could save them from the curse of the Law
-they reject jesus
-not because they are worse
-no spiritual switzerland
-Gal 3:13
-Common Grace points toward God
-God of wrath because of His love
-the problem of sin is its all of us
-dealt with sin by sending his Son
-we receive salvation by faith. HOW DO WE GET FAITH?
-we have sign points toward God but we trust in the signs themselves
-CS Lewis "problem of pain" chp 8

Why express grief
•people doubted Paul's love because of the message he preached
•paul writes not from superiority but sincerity
-talking about judgment is often interpreted as hate
-was: i disapprove of what you say but defend to death your right to say it
-now: if I disagree with what you say is hate
-God of love can't disagree WRONG
-God determines what is right
-god can't love u unless he accept you is to disregard Jesus -comes off as superior
-we are defined by what we are against
-USC wifi signal "UCLA sucks"
-only by sheer grace do we have relationship with God
-1 tim 1:12-13
-explaining change is difficult
-the only people who can feel superior are those who haven't realized their own depravity

How is grief expressed?
•with sincere emotion and sacrificial desire
-we mistake mourning without truth as love
-we must proclaim and grieve
-Paul wishes he could be damned so they would not be
-not possible request, not a perfect sacrifice
-Exodus 32:30-32

AM I WILLING TO GIVE UP GLORIFICATION FOR OTHERS - IF I COULD? LORD, BREAK MY HEART FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND ME....
